People throughout San Diego, California reported hearing a loud explosion while crews battled a massive fire aboard a military assault ship at Naval Base San Diego Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Smoke could be seen billowing from the USS Bonhomme Richard as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
The vessel is an amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego, according to the Department of Defense.
The ship reportedly underwent a regular maintenance cycle before the fire was reported, The Department of Defense said in a press release. Crew members typically are aboard the ship on weekends, but there are fewer than there are on weekdays.
Federal firefighters from the base requested assistance from the San Diego Fire Department at about 9 a.m. Pacific time.
There is no word of injuries at this time.
