The two major cruise companies operating from here on the Texas coast have announced that they will not restart cruises until at least March.
Carnival Cruise Line said Thursday they have canceled all cruises nationwide through Feb. 28.
The announcement comes on the heels of an announcement in October that indicated that Carnival might consider allowing cruises to resume out of Galveston after the first of the year.
Royal Caribbean Cruises also confirmed that they have canceled all cruises in January and February.
The major issue with the announcement means that the Port of Galveston and the Texas economy will go an entire year without a paid cruise leaving local shores due to the pandemic. That means millions in lost revenue, hundreds of lost jobs and even less money flowing into the local and state economy.
No cruises have left the port since the middle of March.
Only 69 of more than 300 cruises have left Texas shores since the beginning of the pandemic in March.
